Fun Facts--International Talk Like a Pirate Day (September 19th)

Ahoy! Everyone likes pirates. Not the smelly-rotten-teeth-sort-who-rob-innocent-people-and-kill-them kind of pirates.

No, no, no! I'm talking about the romantic-swashbuckling-flouncy-shirt-wearing kind of pirate. Avast!

Ahem. Aye. My pirate love began in 2003 when my daughter Amanda begged me to take her to the theater to see the new Orlando Bloom movie. I begrudgingly took her and settled in to take a nap in the dark, but when the opening credits showed an all-star cast and the music started playing, I was hooked.

In 1995, when a couple of guys began talking like pirates while playing raquetball, International Talk Like a Pirate Day was born. Read here for How it all started...

The Original Website has tons of activities like a Personality TestPickup lines, a map of the world, marking where the parties are, and even a free knitting pattern!

I'll leave you with a little video for your entertainment. Feel free to sing along!

Oh, and 'Hide the rum.'

I'm a Thousand Miles Away...

visiting my daughter in sunny Florida,

(Ahh! This is the life!)

but I still wanted to check in with everyone and take a minute to welcome my new followers. Hello, and thanks so much for being here!

Summer will soon be officially over. Most schools have already been in session for at least a week. I'm looking forward to the cooler weather and the scents of Autumn. It's my favorite time of year!

Have you ever seen those Staples commercials where children are wearing long faces and the parents are dancing around the aisles as they shop for school supplies?

HA!

Yeah, that's one of my favorite commercials for a variety of reasons. When our children were younger, I looked forward to them going back to school. The music is quite festive, and of course, the stationery supplies. No explanation needed...

Well, it's time to get back outside and enjoy the sunshine while it lasts. Have a wonderful day!

Fun Facts about September

I usually post on Mondays, but since next week is Labor Day, I decided to post today. I have an awesome Author Spotlight for you all on Tuesday, so I couldn't very well wait too long to do a post on September. I wouldn't want you all to miss out on some fun holidays!

September, the ninth month of the year, is one of four months that contain 30 days. September begins on the same day of the week as December, and no other month ends on the same day as September.

In Latin, septem means 'seven.' September was the seventh month of the Roman calendar until 46 BC, when  the first month of the year was changed from March to January.

September starts the academic year in many countries in the Northern Hemisphere, but I know a few states in the US that start in August.

American Football starts the collegiate and professional seasons in September. (Go Steelers!)

Those born in early to mid-September are under the sign of Virgo, and those born in the later part of the month are born under Libra.

September's birthstone is the sapphire, and the birth flowers are the forget-me-not, morning glory, and aster.
